1: Selective Spending
The kitchen is often considered the most expensive room in the house to remodel. From countertops, the sink, lighting and appliance installations, costs can balloon if you don’t have a focused vision.
Reserve your budget for the items that add the most value, such as the overall layout, with everyday cooking use in mind. Don’t scrimp on the faucet and sink either. Be sure they fit, have good pressure and adequate clearance.
2: Don’t Underestimate Lighting
We spend a lot of time preparing daily meals and entertaining, and lighting sets the mood more than anything else in the room. You don’t have to demolish the entire wall. Take the simple approach of relocating a window left or right, even knocking out more of the wall for a larger window that fills the space with natural light and improves your energy efficiency.
There are a few varieties of lights that you want to use for different areas of the kitchen. Ceiling fixtures brighten highly used work areas like countertops and island and sinks. Under-cabinet lighting fixtures help lighten darker areas under cabinets for meal and beverage preparation. Finally, recessed ceiling lights for over floors which add fill light to the room.
3: Determine Your Kitchen Remodel Budget
Finally, once you have pulled together all the elements you like, it’s time to decide your budget. This can vary depending on the size, wattage and brand of fixtures chosen. The biggest tip I can give you here is this.
Don’t make design choices “on the fly”.
From my experience, it results in bad, costly decisions that result in a kitchen that feels janky, awkward and not user-friendly. Make your design decisions up front, including the fixtures and brands you’ll choose that fit your budget.
